Using the NRS in a Community Based Family Literacy and Numeracy Program
Lynne Fritzpatrick and Rosa McKenna.
These case studies were developed as part of the ANTA Adult Literacy National Project.

This community based provider is located in the outer western suburbs of a major Australian city. The provider is funded by several state and commonwealth government departments administering community, health and education portfolios.

As well as being the site for playgroups and occasional child-care, the provider has an excellent record in delivering labor market programs, personal development courses for young women and ESL and literacy programs. The provider is located adjoining the local government primary school sharing some facilities. There is a close liaison between the school and the community centre.

A community committee of management runs the centre. They have adopted a community development model for adult education and are committed to providing educational program tailored to meeting the goals of individuals wishing to return to education, training or employment and wishing to participate in local community life. Delia, the coordinator, usually does the assessing with sessional staff coming in to teach specific programs. Ros teaches the literacy and ESL programs.

One of the most successful programs conducted has been one for parents in improving basic literacy skills while participating in their child’s transition to school. The course, known locally as the Primary Parents Group, is designed to provide useful information about education for parents as well as practical participation skills to the parents and to give them a taste for further education. While the course is not competency based the Centre wants to be able to document the skills gained by the parents so that they can access further education and training. Perhaps some will go on to the Child Care course, the only vocational accredited conducted by the Centre.
